My grandmother kept a lighthouse on a coast very like this one, and I have never read anything that understood her silences so exactly. Tender without being soft, precise without being cold. I have bought it three times now because I keep giving my copy away.
I finished it at two in the morning and started again from page one before I had put the light out. Marques writes grief the way the tide writes a shoreline: patiently, and without ever once raising her voice. It reads like a memory I did not know I had.
